UNDER
THE
SURFACE®

UNDER THE SURFACE is an art project that begins with photography and extends into fashion, art and music.

It began at an abandoned roadside restaurant. Photographs of the time and memories left behind were reimagined as a fictional music release, “ABANDONED DRIVE-IN.” That experiment set the project in motion.

Photographs take shape as T-shirts and record art, while exhibitions and music events bring people and cultures together. Crossing genres, a single photograph opens up new forms of expression.

There is more to the story than what appears on the surface.

02 — FROM ONE IMPULSE TO THE NEXTWORDS & PHOTOGRAPHS / JOJI SHIMAMOTO

INITIAL
IMPULSE.

An initial impulse takes shape. Then gives rise to the next.

“I want to photograph.” “I want to be photographed.” “I want to make something.” “I want to share it.” Photography begins with simple, honest impulses like these.

Photographs born from encounters with people and places can live beyond the moment. They become artworks and objects, finding their way into someone else’s hands.

I want the proceeds from these works to give back to the people photographed and the collaborators who helped create them, and to support the creation of new work.

When an impulse takes shape and reaches someone, it can spark new encounters and expressions. Through UNDER THE SURFACE, I hope to build that ongoing cycle of creation.

From an initial impulse to a new creation.
And from that creation, the next impulse.
